FAQs
What is EMS?
EMS is whole-body Electrical Muscle Stimulation – a medical-grade training technology that uses safe, low-frequency impulses to activate your major muscle groups all at once. At Volte, we use the latest miha bodytec (i-body) system, trusted in physiotherapy, clinical rehab and elite performance settings. It helps your muscles contract more deeply than they can through voluntary effort alone, giving you an efficient, joint-friendly strength session in just 20 minutes.
How does EMS work?
EMS works by sending controlled impulses through an engineered body suit to stimulate your muscles while you move. At Volte, your trainer guides you through simple, functional exercises while adjusting the intensity for each muscle group. The impulses deepen every contraction, activating up to 90% of your muscle fibres – compared to around 40–70% in conventional workouts.
Is EMS safe?
EMS is considered safe when delivered using certified equipment and guided by trained professionals. Volte uses medical-grade miha bodytec technology and all sessions are led by qualified trainers who tailor the intensity to your body. The impulses are low-frequency and non-invasive, and the workout is low-impact on joints.
Who is EMS suitable for?
EMS is suitable for most people, including beginners, busy professionals, and those returning from injury or managing back pain. At Volte, every session is personalised, so we can adapt the intensity to your fitness level, mobility and goals. It’s a supportive, guided way to build essential strength safely.
What does the EMS suit feel like?
The EMS suit feels like a fitted training layer with gentle pulses that intensify as your trainer adjusts the settings. Most people describe it as a firm, deep muscle engagement – not painful, just different. At Volte, we use the latest i-body suits, designed for comfort, hygiene and precise muscle targeting.
Do the electrical impulses hurt?
EMS impulses don’t hurt. They feel like a strong, controlled muscle contraction — similar to the moment a muscle “switches on” during a good rep. Many people also describe it as a gentle vibration across the muscles, and some even love the sensation on the lower back because it feels a bit like a massage.
At Volte, your trainer increases the intensity gradually so it always feels manageable, comfortable and aligned with your goals.
How is EMS different from a normal workout?
EMS activates more muscle fibres, more deeply, in far less time. In a typical workout, your muscles operate at around 40–70% of their capacity. EMS increases that activation to up to 90%, giving you a full body strength session in just 20 minutes — with no wasted reps and no guesswork.
It also stimulates your fast twitch muscle fibres on impulse. These fibres are the first to decline with injury, ageing or sarcopenia, yet they’re essential for speed, power and reaction — vital for athletes and just as important for anyone who wants to stay strong and capable in everyday life.
EMS goes even deeper by activating deep seated stabilising muscles that are difficult to recruit through conventional training. This makes it especially effective for supporting back health, improving posture and firing the deep core muscles that protect your spine.
At Volte, every session is guided, low impact and personalised, so the intensity always matches your goals and your body.
Why only 20 minutes?
Because EMS activates so many muscle fibres at once, your body works harder in a shorter time. At Volte, every session is structured to deliver maximum benefit without overloading your system – efficient, effective and easy to fit into your week.
How many sessions do I need to see results?
Most people feel a difference within 3–4 sessions, and see visible or measurable changes within 6–8 sessions. At Volte, we track your progress using the InBody 770S scan so you can see improvements in muscle mass, fat balance, metabolic age and overall strength – not just feel them.
Is EMS good for back pain or injuries?
EMS is widely used in physiotherapy because it strengthens deep stabilising muscles without loading the joints. At Volte, your trainer adapts the session to your mobility and comfort level, making it a supportive option for people with back pain, weak core muscles or previous injuries.
Can EMS help with weight loss or toning?
Yes. EMS builds lean muscle, which increases your metabolism and improves body composition. At Volte, we combine EMS training with InBody scanning so you can track changes in muscle mass, fat mass and visceral fat over time.
Can I do EMS if I’m new to exercise?
Absolutely. EMS at Volte is fully guided and low impact, which makes it ideal for beginners. Your trainer controls the intensity throughout, so you can build strength safely, comfortably and with confidence.
Every new person to EMS – even athletes – starts with the same reduced duration protocol. It ensures your body adapts gradually, your muscles respond well, and you get the most from each session.
Can I do EMS if I’m pregnant or postpartum?
EMS is not recommended during pregnancy, but can be suitable postpartum depending on your recovery. At Volte, we’ll discuss your medical history and tailor a plan that supports your return to movement safely.
Are there any medical conditions that prevent EMS?
Yes. EMS isn’t suitable for people with pacemakers, certain heart conditions, epilepsy, or specific medical implants. At Volte, we complete a full health screening before your first session to ensure EMS is right for you.
Is EMS low-impact?
Yes. EMS delivers deep muscle activation without heavy loads or high-impact movements. At Volte, this makes it ideal for people with joint concerns or those returning from injury.
Is EMS used in physiotherapy?
Yes. EMS is widely used in rehab and clinical settings. Volte uses the same medical grade technology (miha bodytec) trusted by physiotherapists and elite performance teams.
What happens in my first session?
Your first Volte session includes an InBody 770S scan, a movement assessment, and a guided EMS workout. Your trainer sets the intensity for each muscle group and supports you through simple, functional exercises so you feel confident from the start.
What should I wear?
At Volte, we provide everything you need for your whole-body EMS session, including the i-body underlayer and EMS suit. Simply arrive for your session and we’ll take care of the rest.
Do I train in a group?
Volte offers 1-to-1 and 1-to-2 sessions. Both are fully guided; the difference is simply whether you prefer individual focus or training alongside a partner.
What is the InBody scan and why do you use it?
The InBody 770S is a medically certified body composition analyser that measures over 45 health markers, including muscle mass, body fat, visceral fat and water balance. At Volte, it helps us personalise your training and track real progress.
How do you personalise the intensity?
Your trainer adjusts each muscle group independently using the miha bodytec system. At Volte, this means your session is tailored to your strength, mobility and goals – not a one-size-fits-all workout.
How much does EMS cost?
Volte offers a range of membership options depending on how often you want to train – this can be discussed with your trainer at your trial session. All sessions include 1-to-1 or 1-to-2 coaching, EMS suit hire and InBody scans.
Do I need a membership?
Most clients choose a membership for consistency and results, but Volte also offers introductory sessions and flexible options depending on your needs.
Do you offer trials?
Yes. Volte offers a first-session experience so you can feel the technology, meet your trainer and see how EMS fits your goals. Click here to book your trial.
How quickly will I feel a difference?
Most people feel stronger and more switched-on within 3–4 sessions. At Volte, we track your progress with InBody scans so you can see measurable changes too.
Will I feel sore after EMS?
You may feel a deep, satisfying muscle ache — similar to what you’d expect after a good strength session. At Volte, your trainer manages the intensity carefully to avoid overloading your system.
This soreness is a good sign, not an injury. Your muscles have been worked effectively, and delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is completely normal after EMS. It typically lasts 3–4 days.
During your first session, we’ll talk through hydration, nutrition and recovery so you know exactly how to support your body and get the most from your training.
Can EMS replace the gym?
For many people, yes. EMS delivers a full-body strength session in 20 minutes. At Volte, some members use EMS as their primary training; others combine it with running, Pilates or gym work.
How is Volte different from at-home EMS devices?
While both use electrical muscle stimulation (EMS), the experience and results are very different.
At-home EMS devices are designed to stimulate individual muscles or small muscle groups, often while you’re sitting or carrying on with everyday activities.
At Volte, we use medical-grade whole-body EMS technology that works alongside guided movement to activate multiple major muscle groups simultaneously. Every session is delivered by a qualified trainer, with the intensity tailored to your body, ability and goals.
Combined with functional exercises, whole-body EMS helps you build deeper, more resilient strength in just 20 minutes – making it a highly effective and time-efficient approach to training.
